Summer Language Institute

students converse on campus

Learn an entire year of a language online this summer! This program is ideal for students who want the opportunity to either learn a new language or continue learning a language in classes with current UChicago students as well as advanced high school students and visiting undergraduate and graduate students.

Students have the opportunity to take modern or ancient language courses. Beginning and intermediate intensive modern language courses are designed for students wishing to develop proficiency across all four language skills—speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Beginning and intermediate ancient language courses guide students in building and honing their reading abilities and their familiarity with ancient texts and culture.

DETAILS

Courses are between six and eight weeks long. Read each course listing carefully.

Each intensive Summer Language course is 300 units of credit, is equivalent to three quarter-long (9 week) courses, and meets for a least 90 contact hours. All Reading courses are 100 units of credit and equivalent to one quarter-long course. See individual course descriptions for prerequisites, if any.

Eligibility: Current high school juniors and older.

Summer Language Institute will be taught online. There is no hybrid or in-person option for these courses. Students cannot live in residence on campus if they enroll in an online course.

UChicago students can learn how to register here. For Visiting students and Pre-College students, learn how to apply here
