Undergraduate Housing Information

Housing Information

Housing and dining for Summer Session (including Summer Quarter and September Term) will cost $1,130 per week and all housing assignments must include the dining plan. A $1,000 deposit is required to complete the housing application and is not refundable, even if you choose to cancel your housing contract prior to the appropriate finalization deadline.

This information does not apply to the MBL Summer Quarter courses; see the MBL page for details.

Residence Hall

During Summer Session 2024, students over the age of 18 will live in a residence hall that is used by UChicago undergraduates during the regular academic year. The specific residence hall will be announced during Spring 2024.  These air-conditioned facilities offer single and double rooms. Each floor is accessible by elevator and has a community bathroom. We designate gender-specific areas in Summer Session residence halls, including community bathrooms.  Single-user bathrooms are also available in each community.

All bedrooms are fully furnished with an extra-long twin bed, desk and chair, dresser, bookshelves, lighting, and window treatments. Amenities include: multiple lounges and recreation rooms, computer labs, music practice rooms, laundry facilities, wireless internet service, vending and ice machines, and 24-hour front desk service.

The Summer Session Office can only make housing arrangements for students in the buildings assigned to us by Summer Conferences; we cannot make arrangements for any other type of campus housing (married student housing, I-House, sublets, etc.) and we cannot guarantee a particular building or room within the hall.

Eligibility

Current UChicago and Visiting Students who are enrolled in at least one in-person course during Summer Quarter or September Term are eligible to apply for housing for the duration of their course. Summer Session is unable to provide visas for international students to take courses in-person.

The period of assignment is based on course enrollment.  Students will be able to move into Summer Quarter or September Term housing on the Sunday before their course(s) begin and will move out the Saturday after their course ends.  Courses during Summer Quarter may begin as early as June 10 and may end as late as August 16. All September Term courses run from August 26 through September 13.

If there is a gap between Summer Quarter and September Term courses, students will need to arrange outside accommodation during the gap period.  No storage of items will be available during a gap period; students are required to move all items out at the end of their Summer Quarter or September Term stay.

There is one exception: students who live in housing during September Term and who have a housing contract for Autumn Quarter 2024 do have the option of extending their September Term housing assignment to cover the week gap between September Term and Autumn Quarter.

Check-in and check-out

Students enrolled in summer courses who opt to live on campus can check in to their designated residence hall the day before their classes start, beginning Sunday, June 9, 2024 and no earlier.

Unfortunately, the Summer Session office does not have any housing available during the time between the end of Spring Quarter and the beginning of Summer Quarter for current residents of UChicago undergraduate residences. Those who are planning to stay on campus for Summer Quarter will still have to move out for the period between quarters and make arrangements for housing elsewhere. Questions about storage options in your current residence hall should be addressed to your current residence hall staff. The Summer Session office cannot guarantee or make arrangements for any other hall or for any other academic quarter.

You must check out of your residence hall by 9 a.m. the day after your classes end. For example, if your last class is on Friday, June 28, then you must check out of the residence hall by 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 29. All summer quarter students must be checked out of the residence hall by 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2024.

Students in September Term courses must check out of the residence hall by September 14, 2024.

Dining

A Maroon Dollars-based meal plan is available to students living on campus for on-campus dining commons and can be used there or at a number of retail establishments on campus. No other dining options are available during the summer, and credit is not issued for meals not eaten. Commuter students are welcome to pay cash to eat in the dining hall when it is open.

Summer Dining Commons have vegetarian and vegan options at every meal. If you have food allergies or other special dietary needs, please list them in the space provided on the Housing Application; Campus Dining needs advance notice to best accommodate any special needs. Please be aware that the kosher and halal stations in the dining hall during the regular academic year are not open during the summer.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served cafeteria-style in the summer Dining Commons seven days a week. You may come in for meals at any time during serving hours:

Note that times are subject to change.

In an effort to control waste, Campus Dining does not allow anyone to take food out of the dining commons other than to grab a cookie or an ice cream cone on your way out. Maroon Dollars will allow you to seek options outside of the dining hall if you are unable to go during regular serving hours.

Housing and dining for Summer Session (including Summer Quarter and September Term) will cost $1,130 per week.  All housing assignments must include the dining plan.

  • Breakfast: 7:30–9:30 a.m.
  • Lunch: 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m.
  • Dinner: 5:30–7:30 p.m.

Request a Single Room or a Specific Roommate

Single rooms are available, but are limited in number. Please indicate your room preference on the housing application.

If you request to live in a double room or apartment and would like to request a specific roommate of the same gender, both you and that person must list each other as a requested roommate when requesting housing during your housing registration.

Mail

When you check in to the hall, you will receive a room number and mailing address information.

Mail can be picked up at the front desk of the hall 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Front Desk will sign for all priority packages (24 hours a day). Students receiving packages will have a package slip in the expanding file at the Front Desk in the Summer Session section. Please do not have mail sent until you receive your room number at check-in. Mail that arrives for Summer Quarter students before they move in or after they depart will be returned to sender.

Guests

The only people who can stay in your room are you and your roommate(s), if applicable. Guests are welcome to visit you in your residence hall room (so long as you meet them at the front desk and they sign in); however, guests cannot stay overnight in student rooms: no exceptions will be made. Hosts are always responsible for the behavior of campus guests; visitors are expected to conform to the behavioral standards set for students at the University.
