Forensic Biology: “Who done it?” – DNA tells the story

Program(s): Undergraduate Courses

This course is designed to introduce the field of forensic science with a focus on forensic biology. Starting with an overview of basic concepts of molecular biology, genetics and inheritance patterns, the course will segue into exploring crucial role of unique signatures that individuals’ DNA bear and can thus lend themselves precisely to solving mysteries and crime. This course will combine the theoretical knowledge with hands-on experiments to provide a comprehensive understanding of forensic biology techniques with a focus on DNA analysis. We will also cover information on broader but closely related topics like serology, species identification, blood group typing on one hand and the legal and ethical aspects surrounding such investigations on the other. Upon completion of the course, students will possess a deep understanding of how DNA analysis is used in forensic investigations and the limitations of the forensic sciences as they are presently practiced in the field and thus be empowered to make meaningful contributions to development of policies and guidelines to improve criminal justice and public safety.
