Summer Intensive Elementary French

Course Code

FREN 10123 10

Course Description

Summer Intensive Elementary French is an eight-week course designed to help students with no prior French develop intermediate proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening for use in everyday communication.

Summer Intensive Elementary French is the equivalent of the FREN 10100-10200-10300 sequence offered during the regular academic year, and successful completion of the course will fulfill the College’s language competency requirement for UChicago students. All students enrolled in FREN 10123 will participate in an online four-skills proficiency assessment as the final exam for the course. Students will receive University of Chicago certification describing their language skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening, based on the results of this assessment.

The course includes a break between morning and afternoon sessions. Students will be expected to schedule and attend several short conversations on an online platform outside of class hours. Online cultural activities may be offered as part of the course program. Additional details will be provided once class starts.

This course is intended for students who have no previous knowledge of French and for those who need an in-depth review of the very basic patterns of the language. Those with prior French must take the placement exam well before class starts. Please contact Isabelle Faton (isabellefaton@uchicago.edu), the French placement coordinator, to arrange placement testing.
