UChicago Police and Fire Summer Scholars Program

In honor of service to communities across the United States, and as part of the Empower Initiative, the College is excited to provide talented students who have a parent actively employed by a city, county, municipal, or state police or fire department within the United States, the opportunity to get an early look at college-level classes and a feel for life as a student at a major research university.

Selected students will have the opportunity to participate in their choice of an Immersion course during Session II. In addition to enrolling a 3-week academic course, students will also participate in workshops and activities hosted by the scholarship program, including admissions-based workshops. Attendance at all scholarship program events is required to receive their certificate of completion.

Current high school sophomores or juniors enrolled in a high school in the United States, who are at least 15 years of age, and whose parents are active, full-time police officers or firefighters, are invited to apply.

Applications will be accepted online beginning in early December, and the final deadline is March 9, 2022. Rolling admissions is not offered for this program. There is no application fee to apply.

Application materials include:

  • Online application
  • Transcript (official or unofficial)
  • Writing sample
  • At least one teacher recommendation
  • At least one parent confirmation email received
  • Police & Fire Verification Form

Applicants must complete the Summer Session Application, and all the related requirements which can be reviewed in the How To Apply section. Only Immersion courses will be covered by the scholarship.

Students may choose any Immersion offered in Summer Session II. Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply for more than one as some courses fill more quickly than others. Please read course descriptions on the website carefully, as some courses have pre-requisites.

After submitting the Summer Session application online, applicants will need to complete and provide the Police & Fire Verification Form for us to verify parents’ employment. This form is available in the UChicago Account and will require you to login to complete it.  Alternatively, applicants may download a copy of the Verification Form, complete it, and independently upload it via their UChicago Account.  We must receive a completed form by March 9, 2022.

Please contact Brandon McCallister at with any questions.

All tuition expenses will be covered by UChicago. Students will need to be prepared to pay for room and board expenses. Students who need additional financial assistance for room and board costs, will need to apply by submitting and completing the Financial Aid & Scholarship Application that is part of the Summer Session Application.
