UChicago Police and Fire Summer Scholars Program

In honor of service to communities across the United States, and as part of the Empower Initiative, the College is excited to launch the inaugural UChicago Police and Fire Summer Scholars program for the summer of 2020.

UChicago Police and Fire Summer Scholars provides talented students who have a parent actively employed by a police or fire department within the United States the opportunity get an early look at college-level classes and a feel for life on campus! 

Selected students will the opportunity to participate in their choice of either an Immersion or Pathways  course during Session II. This is a residential program; all selected students are required to live in on-campus housing for the duration of the program. Students will also participate in additional programming hosted by the scholarship program, including admissions-based workshops and excursions around the city of Chicago.


Eligibility: Current high school sophomores or juniors, who are at least 15 years of age, and whose parents are active, full-time police officers or firefighters.

Applications will be accepted online beginning in early December. After submitting the Summer Session application online, applicants to the Police & Fire program will receive an email providing a link to complete the Police & Fire Verification Form for us to verify applicants' parents' employment. This form is available in the UChicago Account and will require you to login to complete it.  Alternatively, applicants may download a copy of the Verification Form, complete it, and independently upload it via their UChicago Account.  We must receive a completed form by the Regular round deadline of February 26, 2020. The deadline to apply is the Regular round deadline of February 26, 2020. Rolling admissions is not offered for this program. There is no application fee to apply. Review the Application Overview pages for more detailed information.

Tuition & Fees

Tuition expenses will be covered by UChicago. Students will be expected to cover housing costs for the duration of this program, which totals $2,400.

Course Dates

Students may choose any Immersion or Pathways course offered in Summer Session II. Students are strongly encouraged to apply for more than one as some courses fill more quickly than others. Please read course descriptions on the website carefully, as some courses have pre-requisites.
