The U.S. Application Process & Highly Selective Admissions

Join us for a session that discusses holistic review and the different components of a college application to most highly selective schools in the United States. An admissions officer will present for about 45 minutes to provide some context on highly selective institutions, and walk through how different parts of the application are used in holistic review. There is an optional campus tour led by one of our current-student tour guides immediately following the session.

Students who are less familiar with the U.S. system of higher education and the admissions process and students who are planning to apply to college this coming fall will find this session especially helpful. Please register in advance for this session using this link.

Essay Writing: Presenting…YOU!

Nearly all highly selective institutions will, at a minimum, require one essay for the application, and many will require more. We will review some basic dos and don’ts, and share some insight into how essays can add an important perspective in the application. This is an interactive session that requires audience participation – come ready to volunteer and discuss!

This workshop should be helpful to you whether you are working on your essays for your application this fall or you’re simply unsure what a college application essay should be. Please register in advance for this session using this link.

A Look Inside the Admissions Committee: A Case Studies Exercise

Now it’s your turn to see how an admissions committee makes decisions! All participants act as admissions committee members to discuss 3-4 real applications. This is your chance to see how applications are reviewed, how officers collaborate on selecting the incoming class, and how different outcomes may result even with a common set of goals and the same set of applications. 3-4 admissions officers will lead the session, but YOU will be choosing who is admitted, waitlisted, and denied. This workshop lasts 1.5 hours and will require audience participation.

Whether you are applying to college this fall or very early in the search process, this will be a fun and eye-opening workshop! Because materials are required for this session, if you do not register in advance, we cannot guarantee that you will be able to participate. Please register in advance for this session using this link.

Lunch with Admissions

Look for us at lunch! Admissions Officers will be available to talk and answer questions on Thursday, June 20, Tuesday, June 26, Tuesday, July 17, and Tuesday, July 24 at the Cathey Dining Commons during lunchtime.
