Joshua Craze

Collegiate Assistant Professor in the Social Sciences and a Harper-Schmidt Fellow

Joshua Craze has a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley, based on eighteen months of fieldwork on the Sudan-South Sudan border. He has also carried out fieldwork amongst refugees in Cairo, Egypt, Islamist thinkers in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and militia fighters in Sierra Leone. His research interests include early modern political philosophy, refugees and migration, and violence and war. He was the 2014 UNESCO Artist Laureate in Creative Writing, and in addition to his academic work, has also published fiction and essays. His work is available at
