Description:

The structure of organic molecules and the relation between structure and reactivity will be fully discussed in this course. Students will also study alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, arenes, and functional groups containing heteroatoms, along with spectroscopy, stereochemistry, reaction rates and mechanisms of organic reactions. Laboratory work will introduce the techniques required to perform experimental organic chemistry, as well as reinforce the concepts taught in class.

PQ: C average in a year of General Chemistry for UofC students; B average for Visiting Students. Enrollment is limited to 65. Lab fee $90. This course is not open to students in the Summer Quarter for High School.
